Networking

The use of computer-controlled components throughout the system core means that it is possible to relay data via modern and intelligent communications channels for diagnosis and control purposes. At the same time, it is also possible to transfer special control tasks directly to the actuating field element. This, in turn, enables the application of an intelligent field level, which is able to process and relay substantially more information than was previously possible. Maintenance and diagnosis tasks can be performed in centralised and PC-assisted mode, using public, private or closed-circuit communications channels. It is furthermore possible to connect serial data links without any problem whatsoever, enabling intelligent coupling with neighbouring control systems. Modern information exchange with the vehicle is also possible, as all data are input and output in intelligent mode via messages, as a result of which there is practically no limit to the volume of information which can be handled.

Diagnosis and maintenance

Diagnosis and maintenance concepts for technical installations are acquiring increasing importance. Scheidt & Bachmann was quick to respond to the appearance of the first portable personal computers by initiating the development of a diagnosis and maintenance concept for relay systems of the EBÜT generation by the name of IDIS (Intelligent Diagnosis and Information System). Today‘s IDISplus system represents a refinement and expansion of this concept for relay diagnosis. The further introduction of computing technology within the control system enabled this concept to be expanded and provided with a substantially enhanced information density, as is manifested in the diagnosis and maintenance concept for BUES 2000 installations, which goes by the name of CADS (Computer-Aided evaluation and Diagnosis system).

BUES 2000 – Applying technology of the future today

On the basis of the experience acquired with the EBÜT 80 level crossing technology, a modern and future-oriented system core has been developed, the BUES 2000. This is the first system to employ electronic components exclusively to perform all processes at the level crossing which relate to the safe and reliable acquisition, processing, evaluation and output of information, coupled with detailed information for a diagnosis interface. BUES 2000 thus takes due account of the prevailing trends on the hardware market and avoids unnecessary investment costs. In order to meet the varying requirements at a level crossing in terms of different monitoring process and applications, the tried and tested modularity of the EBÜT 80 technology has undergone appropriate refinement, as a result of which individual modules can be configured via software parameterisation. Because of its computer controlled system core the BUES 2000 makes the use of a personnel-computer, which nowadays is the basis of every computer supported job, available for parameterisation and planning. With a specially developed software-tool, the project manager, the user is able to plan and test a security installation without any specific EDP knowledge. After the user has inserted the specific level crossing data the project manager selects the suitable data out of a list, in which all possible parameters for various equipment modifications are stated and makes the transfer to the BUES 2000 possible.

The introduction of the Scheidt&Bachmann vehicle sensor (FSSB) represented the first ever deployment of electronic field elements within railway signalling installations. This course of development has since been pursued as a key field of work at Scheidt & Bachmann, culminating in the intelligent field level, which incorporates an intelligent evaluation and monitoring function, in addition to its control function.
